Kimmo Lahtinen... Yes you can use it on more than one computer. Our license is a family license. You can use it. The kids can use it. The dog can use it. The neighbors dog cannot use it.

I once had problems with graphics software that I bought. After beeing angry for a while, I sat down and wrote my own. 15 years later, you are using 95 percent of it for free. Enjoy it if you want to. God bless.

UPDATE: My AV (Ashampoo Anti-Malware v1.21) found a Trojan in one of the Howler .exe files: http://my.jetscreenshot.com/20413/20130626-wmwl-39kb

Pity, looked like a nice program to mess around with. Now I'll have to kiss it good bye and release it back into the wild.

I'm re-scanning my HD with IObit Pro v2 to make sure the Trojan is not a false positive. Will report later if the same file pops up again in the IObit logs. You might want to run your own scans of the Howler folder to make sure your HD is clean. I can't be sure if the Trojan came with the software or if my machine caught it independently but the Howler file is where it has chosen to hide in the meantime.

Now, it is "probably" possible to remove the second popup, the web links. That was put there to allow new users to find our where help and tutorials are available. Once you've looked over the web sites, it may be possible to remove this popup by removing the "Dogwaffle_Communities_pm.exe" plugin. Mind you, I have not tried it yet.

>‘unexpected error, quitting’, so even worse.

Unexpected error means the program needs to be run as administrator. The program is usually run once as administrator from the installer, and then it doesn't need to run as administrator again. However it is possible to not run the program from the installer, which I admit is a software fault on my part. Will have to get it in the next version.

If you did not run the program direcly after installation from the installer, you will have to run once as administrator.

>the stupid stdole2.tlb DIDN’T REGISTER.
Why isn’t a Best3D rep here to explain??

Windows is a complex software environment. There is a lot of 3rd party software out there that effects us even though we have no relationship with them. For example, some antivirus or malware programs will incorectly assess us as a threat. Most of those programs use huristics and don't actually identify real threats, just the likelyhood that something might be a threat. Many of these programs allow a program to be excepted for just such a case. You will have to check your av/malware settings to see if they are blocking us.

There are other programs that patch into the operating system and may interact with us in unexpected ways. For example, once, a CD burning program kept starting up whenever our program was run, because it was patched into the filesystem, and it was invoked simply because we accessed the file system to let the user explore files.

Hi again, UPDATE on my last Comment asking for Help (Program not working, giving me missing or corrupted ocx Error) As usual there is nothing better than.. self-help to figure something out.

First of all downloaded Demo version of PDH thinking something in it 'might trigger' GAOTD Special Edition - it didin't, Error changed to: 'unexpected error, quitting', so even worse.

(Just in case - Updated Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 Common Controls by downloading the installer from here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=10019)

Program still didn't work, but this time I run it "as Admin" - and it's WORKING AGAIN! No more pop-ups, hurray! (..err, except the one that it is Special Edition, but compare to how it behaved before - I can put up with it)

Don't know if reinstalling (updating) MVB had helped here at all, but in ernest - that's what I did. Hope it helps someone. BTW - no good saying on Help Pages that running "As Admin" is not necessary any longer with the newest Version. So please work on it. It can really spare Users a lot of despair!

I am not a techy but it seems to me that a simple system restore to an earlier date should solve your problem.

Hope it helps.

Hi, acting on advice given to me by Dan (of Project Dogwaffle Howler) -

">Hi, upon trying to launch this Program (on my Win7, Dell Inspiron 5720) – I get Message from Strongvault Oneline Backup: “The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable”. Anyone knows why?? (fran)

We have no relationship with Strongvault. It appears to install itself with various programs without the users knowledge. You can google how to remove it."

- I DID remove it, and after removing it - Dogwaffle Howler Program STOPPED WORKING altogether!! ???

What I get instead is: "Project Dogwaffle Professional Run-time error '339':
Component'comctl32.ocx' not correctly registered:file is missing or invalid"

Strongvault Online Backup DID NOT manifest itself on my PC until yesterday. I had no idea WHY it attached itself to this very Program (PDH), and WHAT'S MORE - to it's "Professional" component, like other Pop-ups people were getting with GAOTD version (that is Special Edition), but the Program cannot function without it. What gives? I LOST IT:(

Dan!, Thank You for Your Help so far, but I need it even more now, if You still care. If You have "no relationship with Strongvault" - my Example should help You too. Can I make PDH 8.2 work again? I hardly had any chance to discover it for myself:(

@Dan
">The nag screen is just the price of using a program that has taken 15 years to develop, otherwise for free."

You seem to be missing the entire point of GOTD if you think a 'price' of any kind should be 'charged' for anything offered on here period. You are not doing yourself any favors by putting in an annoying spam advertisement into your program. Intentionally adding in unwanted advertisement would cost you more customers than it would actually get you. The point of GOTD is to get promotion, exposure, and advertisement for your product. Spamming people with ads in your program is in my opinion NOT acceptable. To put it bluntly, if you didn't intentionally spam people with ads in your 'special edition' I might have actually found your program favorable enough to suggest to several of my professional artist friends and developers. But, if anything this business practice rather will make me suggest to NOT invest in the actual full version of this program. Remember, no one likes spam popups and adverts, forcing them on your customers will cost you more than you gain.

I have pd pro 4 from the cool creative bundle, it will be interesting to see what all is different.

Thought I agree with the poster above, it's not quite GOTD when it's a "special edition". Not whining, just pointing out it does say the softwares here are "full, commercial versions". I can see why some people do feel "let down" a bit.
Maybe have the "special editions" be a bonus giveaway with a full commercial software as the main that day would help?

Encountered an installation error, accessing the OLE registry in system 32: http://my.jetscreenshot.com/20413/20130625-qhwv-22kb - I clicked 'Ignore' (which, btw, was NOT recommended by the installation wizard) and the rest of the setup went without a glitch. When I opened the program, I noticed that I can't see the mouse cursor when I'm in the working field of the screen. I can see the different tools as I select them - pencil, air brush, etc. - but once I move to the canvas, the cursor disappears and I have to guess where my starting point will be. That makes me feel like I'm shooting in the dark. Can't be sure if this problem was triggered by the specific installation error I mentioned above. I'm on Windows Vista 32-bit. Any suggestions? I tried uninstalling and re-installing but it happened both times. Thanks.

Why all the re-registering of old DLLs? Haven't we moved beyond messing around with system-level libraries? Why not version-checking to see if they exist and/or are already newer?
Is this 1998??

I've been loyal with GOTD for years, but this takes the cake. Not only are there so many 'warnings' and 'install this extra thing' that my work laptop won't even ALLOW this to be installed, I've tried to install the program, finslly gave up after untold hours trying end-runs around my virus software, but now I hsve this EFFING tabs and toolbars that I DO NOT WANT and CANNOT MAKE GO AWAY despite the developer's 'promise' to 'include uninstall instructions'.

If I were GOTD I would ban this dev from future opportunities. I really wanted to try this software but if it were a reputable piece of software, it would not try to trick me into installing a bunch of crap I don't want.

Now my computer is f*cked up. How do I make this auto-tab in Firefox go away? Sure, I'd rather have had the software, but since it sets off so many alarms, it's NOT FAIR that I have to take hours to figure out how to make it like I never tried to install this software,.

Bad mojo for you, GOTD. I'm so angry.

I'm feeling like a guinea pig again. Do vendors use us
as experimental lab rats for their programs
cause my PC just ran into HOWLER FAIL:
MS Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP2
C:\windows\system32\stdole2.tlb
Unable to register the type library: RegisterTypeLib failed;code
0x8002801C.
Error accessing the OLE registry.
Click Retry to try again, Ignore to proceed anyway (not recommended) or Abort to cancel installation.

Oddly enough, after trying both my personal account and then downloading again to my Administrative account (and YES, BOTH ways I clicked RUN AS ADMIN) and getting the error, I did what one of the above posters did and tried installing again and just plowed through using IGNORE and it's running. Can't help but wonder how and what might not work tomorrow or at some future point because the stupid stdole2.tlb DIDN'T REGISTER.
Why isn't a Best3D rep here to explain??
Is this freebie a waste of time? Will the program die in the near future? Will a creation I slave over not be saved correctly? Inquiring minds wanna know.

Windows 7 Home Premium, i7, 8GB RAM Program installed without problems and runs without problems. I used the free version ages ago and didn't know what to expect from this give-away, especially after seeing the list of removed filters. But Dogwaffle still has the best brush engines and this "special version" of the program not only has a tremendous number of brushes, brush effects and animation features but has a lot more documentation than most of the give-aways I've installed. It's nice to have a manual to use to learn the more esoteric features of the program. Having problems with the program? See the FAQ section. Every program isn't going to install and run perfectly on every computer in existence. Another plus is that the menu and brush options are nicely nested which makes getting to them not only easy to do but efficient. Without the removed filters (which are mostly for photo editing and which I don't need) and with the nag screen which, since I use a lot of freebies for my online work, is not a big bother, this is a wonderful program with a ton of features.

My unappreciated enthusiasm #30 for this program stems from the fact that as a programmer it is obvious just how much care and work has gone into it.
There is no shortage of overpriced badly programmed applications today; on the other hand the way the brushes, User, Particles and Bristle brushes in today's offering function, these alone make it stand out as exceptional.

And to those of you who couldn't be bothered to download it or try it, you lost out!

Here are a few answers to some of the many questions. I'll try to answer as many as I can. You can find if your question list listed by searching for the first part of your user name.

>installed on XPSP3 but asks for .net4 (by Adif)

We can be installed on Windows XP as long as it is Service Pack 3. The .net framework is not an official requirement, but some plugins use it such as the batch browser and picture framer. If .net 4 is not installed, those functions won't be available.

>Every time I run the program a pop-up appears (spodo commodo)

>The nag screen is just the price of using a program that has taken 15 years to develop, otherwise for free.

>If I buy the full version, I am wondering about the licence, can I use it on more than one computer? (Kimmo)

Yes, if you are the owner of the license of the full version, you can use it on one or more of your own personal machines. We are a "family" paint program. The wife can use it, the kids can use it (if they're in college, they can probably get their own), the dog can use it, but the neighbors dog can't use it.

>Does’t feel very ‘Special Edition’ with 20 of the best filters missing (John)

I removed 20 filters from a program with roughly 140 filters, not to mention all it's other functions which are un-touched. Faced with the choice of which ones to eliminate, I picked ones that would not cripple the program as a general purpose painting package, and ones there were relatively esoteric, leaving an upgrade path for those who wanted more.

>Installing on Vista Premium – error with file stdole2.tlb – unable to register, Error accessing OLE registry. (John)

The only thing that comes to mind is that you are installing without administrator rights, or perhaps your antivirus is blocking the stdole2.tlb file from installing. In the case of the latter, you may have to make an exception with your AV program. stdole2.tlb is an older file and may be targeted for various reasons by an AV program, but it is a valid system file related to object linking and embedding.

In case of the former, administrative rights are required to install. Once installed, administrative rights are no longer required.

In a third case, some components won't install simply because they are already installed, and simply ignoring the error message is the solution.

>Install failed badly with the program caught in a loop as unable to link with an old uninstalled version of autocad. Take care with this if you are running other similar software (Peter)

Yeah, that's weird. We've had cases in the past where files where there was a conflict with files in the temp folder after extracting the installer, resulting in the wrong program running. You might try clearing your temp folder. Only guess I have right now.

>The Giveaway Project Dogwaffle Howler 8.2 comes with Pixo installer and installed on my computer.
Pixo start as Pixo Give away of the day and at the same time says that trial expired, and asks to by a registration number (Ben)

See above.

>Very nice program. Very tempted to upgrade. A question though: why are GOTD users offered an upgrade for $49.50, but on the website there is a general offer for the program for $49. (John)

Good question. It takes a while to prepare these programs for GOTD, and we didn't know when it was going to go online. It just happened to coincide with another marketing effort we had going on.

>how to get a copy-layer..

You can "store an image copy" and restore it anywhere you like.

>“Unable to register the type library; RegisterTypeLib failed;code 0x8002801C. Error accessing the OLE registry. Click retry, ignore abort…” (drvajra)

I have not seen this error before. If you have more information, it would be appreciated. Often in these cases, you can click 'ignore' but I can't promise anything. Be sure that you have administrative rights to install software. You may have to check your UAC settings. We require administrative rights to install, but not to run thereafter.

>>The fact that it is a Special Edition with 20 filters not included means that it is valued at the same price as the full version. (Justine)

The special price is for the full version with all the features intact, not the special edition.

>Error
—————————
C:\Windows\system32\stdole2.tlb
Unable to register the type library: RegisterTypeLib failed; code 0x8002801C.
Error accessing the OLE registry.
Click Retry to try again, Ignore to proceed anyway (not recommended), or Abort to cancel installation.

again, this could be an AV or other program keeping the file from being installed. You may check with your AV to see if this is the case. AV softwares do in fact produce many false positives and can keep older programs from running, simply because they are older (we've been on the market for 15 years, though our most recent major release was under one year ago with several upgrades since then)

We also require administrative rights to install. stdole2.tlb is a type library related to object linking and embedding, and old but fundamental technology that is used in Microsoft Windows.

>Installed on windows xp sp3 and crashes as soon as starts, says Run-time error ‘-2147417848 (80010108)’ Automation Error (BooN)

We do run under Windows XP, though it must be SP3. It is getting hard to support XP though. You might try a reboot and try again.

>Sadly, this offer is an incomplete (dare I say “cripplware”)

I tried to only remove filters that would not hamper the program as a digital painter -- the 3d Designer, for example. The fact is, the lions share of our users are hobbiests, so simply "commercially limiting" the program was not enough to encourage users to by the program. Howler Version 8.2 is our latest premium product and what we make our living on.

>Hi, upon trying to launch this Program (on my Win7, Dell Inspiron 5720) – I get Message from Strongvault Oneline Backup: “The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unenviable”. Anyone knows why?? (fran)

We have no relationship with Strongvault. It appears to install itself with various programs without the users knowledge. You can google how to remove it.

>“Tablet devices are fully supported.” (Allie oops)

That is "tablet" as in digitizing devices such as the Waccom tablet. However, we have been developing for several years on the Atom and C60 processors looking forward to Tablet computers that run Windows 8, such as the Surface, and we do try to take advantage of the hardware on those devices.

Nice program, seems different to other 'paint' offerings - but as others have commented, the upgrade pop-up is very annoying.
Unless the authors can publish here on GAOTD how to disable it I'm afraid I will un-install it tomorrow.
You are not doing the program any good by having it there.....

I have used PD Howler since version 1.1 when it was called Project Dogwaffle. The program is brush-centric and you can do just about anything with the brushes. There are all kinds of "Easter Eggs" in the program, FX brushes in tabs, make your own brushes, media brushes and modifying the behavior of brushes and more. You can do everything from photo manipulation to painting from scratch. Which was the original reason I got it. Oil painting emulation, Water painting emulation, spray painting emulation and more! And no mess to clean up afterwards. I love this program, and while I have GIMP and Twisted Brush, and Art Weaver, I come back to Howler every time.

In my experiences, Giveaway of the Day is supposed to be fully functional software that operates like normal. Ripping out all of the good filters and having spam popups requesting you to buy the full version is not fully functional software that functions like normal. An unknown piece of software I've never heard of until now, using this kind of strong-arm advertisement tactics, charging a hundred dollars for the full version... I'll have to pass. There's plenty of freeware stuff out there that is just as good, if not better than this 'special edition'. Uninstalled quick after realizing the popup happens every single time it is launched, not just the first time.

Hi, upon trying to launch this Program (on my Win7, Dell Inspiron 5720) - I get Message from Strongvault Oneline Backup: "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unenviable". Anyone knows why??

After initial "no go" without it - few clicks trying to Ok, Cancel, x-it - Programs starts anyway (plus the same clicking to get rid of that popping up Message), and when trying to Exit Program - the same annoying procedure must occur before Program exits.

Just me? Is it Dell? Is it this Giveaway? I haven't a clue! Other Installations of GAOTD (and/or other Setups) don't ask for Strongvault. Thanks in advance for Help.

Installing on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit, got the same error as reported above by #11 (John), #25 (drvajra) and #29 (Steve Kunkel). Clicked "ignore" and setup appeared to finish normally. Yikes, my jaw dropped when Dogwaffle's name appeared. Someone mentioned it's significantly different from Photoshop & GIMP. True, but that's not a bad thing if you can't afford Photoshop and can't wrap your head around GIMP's GUI.

Sadly, this offer is an incomplete (dare I say "cripplware") version. However, it's well worth the download and it's well worth a trip over to the publisher's site to see what else they offer. Personally, I wish TheBest3D was a regular, or heck, even an annual GAOTD participant, like several other high class vendors, because they're too expensive for me to get into another Adobe-like buy and constantly upgrade routine and there's no way I'm jumping through the "TrialPay" hoops.

Dare I hope they'll offer PD PARTICLES again? When GAOTD offered that back in 2008 I loved its special effects for the few days before (like so many GAOTD programs) it died because some phantom registry key was accidentally torched and, well, you all know the unnecessary brick wall GAOTD erects to prevent recovery.

I also got that "Error accessing the OLE registry. " I decline to click Ignore - it warned me not to. Sorry, it means to me something is very wrong with this quality-wise.

Now and again software appears that just about takes your breath away and this is one. It is quite the most outstanding piece of work I've seen for a long time.

Using this software will be an adventure and full of surprises, pure delight!

Very nice! Lots to play with here. I have many many graphics programmes but I'm always open to new ones. I'm not sure I would have paid $99 for it but as a freebie I'm pretty chuffed. I'll be having a great time giving this a workout. Thanks GAOTD and The Best3D!

So far it seems like a good application. I'm not fond of the two pop-up dialog boxes being a constant feature whenever the application starts. I understand the need to try to sell the full version though. Apart from that, I don't get the full price being listed above. The fact that it is a Special Edition with 20 filters not included means that it is valued at the same price as the full version.

About your question how to get a copy-layer..

I have this suggestion

Like I already thought, a very nice program and on top of that lots of freebies on their site as well. HOWEVER........ LAYERS.... I am not a great artist but I like to make drawings (or rather TRY to make drawings) from my pictures. In Paint.net I used to open the image, put a layer on top and on that layer I uh...carboncope so to say, the outline of the subject (so to make sure my cat doesn't have rabbit ears)
I don't see how I can do this in this program. Is it possible? and if so... how... and can this "layer" when I am finished carbon copying be removed again? Couldn't find any reference to layers in their tutorials

The Giveaway Project Dogwaffle Howler 8.2 comes with Pixo installer and installed on my computer.
Pixo start as Pixo Give away of the day and at the same time says that trial expired, and asks to by a registration number

Is that an attempt to sell Pixo to Giveawyoftheday members?

Pixo company -Bendigo, says that they don't know anything about Pixo installer included in Giveawyoftheday neither have any knowledge about Project Dogwaffle Howler 8.2

What is going on?

Please GAOTD dont't remove my comment and answer my question

Install failed badly with the program caught in a loop as unable to link with an old uninstalled version of autocad. Take care with this if you are running other similar software

This looks like a nifty program to play with. I like that there are built in GUI color changes, a couple more or customizable would be nice. (higher contrast maybe)

The top menu bar is good size the the second bar down is very small and does not seem to be customizable - for those of us with vision issues, the ability to make that second bar double size would be darn helpful.

Coming from photoshop.. it's disconcerting to not have an edit drop down on the menu bar.. I'm sure the functions are in there . I can see there is going to be a learning curve.

Thanks for the taste of this very interesting looking program.

Wow! This is impressive!! Definitely not your average Paint Program! I can hardly wait to spend more time finding out what all it can do.

$99.00 is a lot, but you do tend to get what you pay for. And $50.00 off is a generous discount. Only time will tell the tale. But so far, it Howls!

Personally I love it when developers venture outside the box, and do things in very unique ways such as this. Even if nothing else, this program is certainly unique! And it even calls itself a very unique name.. I had little idea what to expect.

It will take some time to really work it out and check out all the unusual features in depth, but just on a quick run-through, I would call this one of the better GAOTD's in quite a long time, especially if the user is into graphics and effects on a pretty significant scale. Clearly there are features here that cannot be achieved by any similar programs I am currently aware of.

Unless it crashes and burns, or something similar, (which it shows no signs of doing), I'd call this a keeper! Even if nothing else, just playing with it is a barrel of fun!

Thanks to GAOTD and to TheBest3D, and of course DogWaffleHowler!
Who knew?

Good Stuff!

-JC
